Denise Monkau

MSc in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Radboud University

Profile on NAD Network

In the NAD PhD programme, Denise Monkau wants to dive deeper into research in consciousness and perception.

With a master’s degree in Cognitive Neuroscience, Denise Monkau takes a special interest in consciousness, perception and investigating these topics using computational methods. She will explore avenues for this during the pre-PhD year:

“After I found my passion for AI and Neuroscience, I found my drive to be most fuelled when I was able to focus on my favourite topics of perception and consciousness. This programme intrigued me with its freedom to do exactly that: focus on the aspects of science I am most interested in. Additionally, the opportunity to learn, grow and, importantly, collaborate across Denmark excited me further. hope to explore techniques and approaches to (computational) cognitive neuroscience which I still have little practical experience in, i.e. clinical work and neuroimaging in humans,” Denise explains.

For her first rotation, Denise will join the Dietz Lab at the University of Southern Denmark where she will learn to work with MEG and fMRI in humans. In addition, she will learn the processing and analytical skills to assess this data, including dynamic causal modelling.

Denise is a creative spirit, and this is expressed both in research and in her hobbies. She enjoys writing fictional stories, dancing, gaming and playing the guitar.

Lab rotations - pre-PhD year

  1. Rotation 1

Dietz Lab, Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience, Aarhus University w/PI Associate Professor Martin Dietz

The lab's main research focus is investigating the function of neural circuits responsible for neurotypical and pathological (i.e. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression) cognition.

Denise will be joining in on a couple of different projects involving MEG and fMRI in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

She will primarily focus on learning to use MEG and fMRI in humans. In addition, she will learn processing and analytical skills to assess this data, including dynamic causal modelling.
